When Steve van Hulle ended his maritime career in 2009, his goal was clear: to spend more time with his family. He transitioned to an office job in the maritime sector. What started as a step back in intensity quickly led to a leadership role within a growing organization.
“I thought: it’s time for balance. But soon enough, I was back in the thick of the action.”
After a series of acquisitions and internal shifts, Steve was appointed Managing Director of a business unit within Boskalis in 2016. This unit quickly grew to become the largest within the company. The transition from operational to strategic leadership brought significant challenges — not only organizational but also personal.
Leadership Requires Adaptation The move from ship to boardroom required a completely different mindset. Where he was used to direct communication and clear structures, he now found himself in a complex field of stakeholders, processes, and changing dynamics. The combination of growth, internal resistance, and high expectations made it clear that additional support was needed.
Collaboration with Bolster At this stage, Bolster was brought in. The focus: alignment within the management team, strengthening leadership, and building a supported strategy.
“You realize at some point that you can’t do it alone. Mapping out strategy is one thing, but getting people on board is another.”
Bolster helped the MT operate as one team. Through sharp reflection, honest feedback, and intensive sessions, clarity emerged about direction, role distribution, and collaboration. The external guidance accelerated progress — precisely because there was a conscious slowdown.
Result: Growth and Focus The results speak for themselves: the business unit grew to become the largest within Boskalis. The strategy is in place. The team functions better than ever. People have started to show ownership, and where necessary, positions have been adjusted or replaced.
“The number I mentioned in our first session seemed unrealistic at the time. Now we’re close. Not by working harder, but by working better together.”
Advice to Other Leaders Steve is clear about what he recommends to other leaders:
- Ensure a clear strategy.
- Invest in your team and create alignment.
- Engage external guidance.
“As a leader, you want to move quickly. But sometimes you need to slow down to speed up. Bolster helped us find that balance. Without them, this growth would not have been possible.”
