The urgency of talent development: Why you need to act now

In times of unrest and great challenges for companies and corporates, leadership and talent development programs are often put on the back burner. But it is precisely then that we should focus on the development of internal talent. Some employees have more time to learn something new; others may want to retrain in this rapidly evolving work environment. Online providers such as Coursera and Udemy have seen a huge increase in demand. People want to learn new things and develop themselves, so why would that be different for internal programs?

Last year, we spoke with Tony Pusic, formerly VP EMEA operations at Merck, about the importance of developing talent within the organization. Over the years, Bolster has worked closely with Tony to organize several of their ‘Talent Summits’. This is what he had to say;

Why hold a Talent Summit?

“With the Talent Summit, we wanted to create a real talent factory in Europe,” says Tony. They identified key talent from different locations and helped accelerate their career paths within MSD. In addition to the primary benefit of retraining key figures, it also helped to grow talent within MSD rather than recruiting externally, and improved retention of top talent. As Tony noted: “We were able to bring together about 20 to 30 people from different and diverse locations in Europe and Africa. We really created something special, something innovative and educational; something that was very different from the daily work of the talents.”

Thanks to MSD’s hard work and investment, the Talent Summit was a great success. But Tony also remembers the responsibility he felt in setting up the summit: “When you bring a group of people together for two or three days, that’s a huge responsibility … my biggest fear was that I would have 20-30 people in one place and that I would waste their time.”
